Dr. Hyung Dong Park
Founder and the Music Director of the Samaritan Doctors Orchestra (SDO)
Dr. Hyung Dong Park is a Founder and the Music Director of the Samaritan Doctors Orchestra (SDO).
Born in Seoul, South Korea, he became a surgeon in 1987. After finishing his military service as a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force, he went to Tanzania and served for ten years as a missionary surgeon. Dr. Park and his family moved to the USA in 2002, and he now works as a physician at the Good Samaritan Hospital in New York.
As a medical student, he founded a medical school orchestra of where he studied medicine in Seoul, which grew to be one of the notable medical school orchestras in South Korea. Throughout his life, Dr. Park has contributed in organizing numerous concerts in Seoul, in Africa, even after moving to NY. He often participates as a violinist in community orchestras, including Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey and the Weill Cornell Music and Medicine Orchestra. He is a member of World Doctors Orchestra and performed in Dubai in March 2018 . He is a member of World Civic Orchestra also and participated in the New York concert at the Alice Tully Hall in July 2018.
Dr. Park has had a vision of becoming an orchestra conductor since his youth. Classical music, especially all the Beethoven’s Symphonies, have been part of his life since the age of 14. He studied orchestra conducting initially under the private tutelage of Maestro Kyunghun Kim, a professor at Lehman College in CUNY, who also conducts the Weill Cornell Music and Medicine Orchestra. Also he constantly improves the conducting skills by attending master classes of orchestra conducting in Europeand USA on multiple occasions.
Dr. Park has decided to go back to Africa soon to do medical missionary work again. Music always follows him. Surely there will be a concert in Africa with SDO members. Hopefully it will be a great opportunity for the participants to share their talent and time with the African people.
